Milonga Op.3 (from Dos Canciones)--1943 |

Recorded by Eduardo Delgado
Milonga is an instrumental version of the song “Canción al arbol del olvido” (Song of the Tree of Forgetfulness), the setting of a poem by the modern Uruguayan poet Fernán Silva Valdés, created to teach students in the early stages of their musical learning. The "milonga" is a type of folk music that used to be recited by the payadores (gaucho troubadours who sing with guitar accompaniment). The lyrics sung to the rhythm of the milonga, tell a man's disconsolate feeling toward his beloved:
I slept under the tree of the forgetfulness not to think of you anymore,
but when I woke up from my dream, I soon remembered vidalitay (meaning "dear woman"), because I forgot to forget you. |
